I had a few moments of self-pity last week as I realized that last Thursday I became an old maid.
Yes, on January 4th I was officially the age my mother was the day she got married but alas, I am not. This makes me an old maid.
My married sister was trying to question me on the whole matter (and I still don't think she understands), asking me if, since she was beyond that age when she got married, was she then an old maid? What kind of question is that? "Was I an old maid when I got married?"...as if!
I then had to explain to her that both "marital status" and "old-maid-ness" are retroactive titles. She is now married and therefore has never been an old maid, whereas if I never marry, then my "old-maid-ness" dates back to last Thursday.
*sigh*

Sorry to play the semantics game, but it seems to me that "old maid" is an oxymoron of sorts. Although, it would not be in your best interest to ask me to explain, as I will probably only success in becoming the target of an onslaught of words such as "rude, inconsiderate, brash, proud, detestable, overly fastidious" and so on and so forth. When in fact I would be trying to say that the concept of old maid-ship is far too subjective and individual case based.
It's OK; you can think that facts are subjective if you want to. :~p
Actually, on second thought: it might benefit me more to subjectify my own assessments!
Dear Friend, I feel your pain for I too share your state. I shed a tear for it was like yesterday, no...last Tuesday the 9th to be exact, that marked my 3rd year of "old-maid-ness". Yes, but I have come to believe that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. So chin up, for you are not alone...in fact, you could start an "old maid & old gentleman's club" but wait...that would be a singles group...never mind, bad idea.
Hey, I had to stop in and say Happy Birthday to you!! Hope it's great:o) Christ's mercy and His peace be with you.
Ya, 'single's club' is definitely out! But thanks for bringing it up, now I'm able to think of worse things than being single. :~)
Thanks for stopping by, and for the happy birthday!
